Many find the Michigan sex offender list confusing

After a person is convicted of a sex crime in Michigan, they are often placed on the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry. This registry is the state's sex offender list and it harbors the names of people that have been convicted of crimes varying from one end of severity to the other.

A recent investigation conducted by a news outlet in the state found that users of the system believe it to be confusing. The news team went to a local coffee shop and asked people there to navigate through the system in an attempt to find people that could be considered dangerous to the public. The investigation found that a recent change to the system may not be having its desired effect.

Man tries to appeal rape conviction, receives denial

According to authorities, a 15-year-old girl was raped at Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on May 15, 2010. The alleged perpetrator of the sex offense was 19 years old at the time and was at the school for a Saturday session to make up credits. He says that he did not rape the girl.

Last year, the now 21-year-old man was convicted of the crime and sentenced to nine to 40 years in prison. He appealed this result soon after.

Three CMU football players arrested on drug charges

Three football players from Central Michigan University in the town of Mt. Pleasant have been arrested. The players each face three drug charges: maintaining a drug house, possession of narcotics and manufacturing narcotics.

Two of the three were reportedly growing hallucinogenic mushrooms in a residence hall on the campus of Central Michigan University. Those two have both been processed and released on bond. The third individual, a freshman wide receiver, is still in jail with a bond set at $10,000.

Former beauty queen pleads no contest to DUI charges

With a legal blood alcohol content of 0.08 for to be considered driving drunk, Michigan is like most other states. According to police, a former Miss USA was driving with enough alcohol in her system to put her at twice the legal limit. DUI charges were filed against the 2010 pageant winner soon after she was pulled over.

The 26-year-old beauty queen has said that she was not drinking that night in December when she was arrested. Two breath tests conducted by police showed results that indicated her blood alcohol content was between 0.19 and 0.20.

Fifteen-year-old may spend life behind bars for murder

Officials are unsure of the sentence that a judge will give to a person recently found guilty of murder by a jury in mid-Michigan. The alleged murderer was 13 years old at the time the crime was committed. Now 15, his criminal conviction has left the judge and many others wondering what to do.

Prosecutors allege that the teenager and six others shot and killed a woman at her home in Lansing, Michigan. The sentencing of the 15-year-old began earlier this month. A psychologist and a juvenile court officer have said that the teen is psychopathic and anti-social.

Three shot during drug deal, suspect still at large

A 24-year-old man is a suspect in a shooting that occurred after a drug deal went bad. Police officers in Ypsilanti, Michigan, are searching for the man, but have not yet found him. He has been accused of attempted murder, and the authorities will likely file criminal charges against him once he is apprehended.

According to reports, the shooting occurred in the 300 block of Jarvis, near the edge of Eastern Michigan University's campus. The location of the shooting was near the Eagles Nest Apartments, according to a student who helped one of the victims of the shooting. Authorities believe that the 24-year-old suspect lives in the area near those apartments.

Woman sentenced after alleged sexual conduct with teenage girl

A Michigan woman has been sentenced to the maximum sentence for having alleged criminal sexual conduct with a 14-year-old girl. According to the authorities, the 34-year-old woman from Coldwater, Michigan, used drugs and alcohol to allow her and her boyfriend to rape the 14-year-old girl.

The supposed sex crimes occurred on June 19, 2011, during a birthday party at the home of the woman. Teenagers at the party had used both marijuana and alcohol. The woman allegedly said that the victim had agreed to the sexual encounter.

Saline police arrest two men, both eligible for super drunk law

With a new drunk driving law, Michigan has become a state where it can cost an individual a considerable amount of time and money to drive drunk. The new DUI law is known as the "super drunk" law, and it comes with heightened consequences for individuals caught driving with a blood alcohol content that is 0.17 or higher.

A driver in Saline, Michigan, was recently reported to have a blood alcohol content of 0.24. A preliminary Breathalyzer test was used to determine his BAC. The amount allegedly found in the man's blood is three times the legal limit. According to authorities, two other breath tests failed. The man agreed to a blood test at St. Joseph Hospital in Saline.

Doctor convicted on 12 counts of felony conspiracy

Licensed medical practitioners have much easier access to controlled substances than others. Allegedly, one Michigan doctor used that access to make money.

Drug charges were filed against a doctor of osteopathic medicine living in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The charges came last year and he was convicted in November. According to authorities, the man was conspiring to deliver controlled substances; he was convicted on 12 felony counts of the act. Information on what controlled substances were being distributed or for how long was not provided.

Michigan man allegedly caught with synthetic drugs

The owner of a smoke shop in Hastings, Michigan, may not own his store much longer. The man was recently accused of eight different drug charges after being stopped by traffic officers three different times.

During two October 2011 traffic stops, authorities allegedly found drugs on the man. Those substances were sent to a lab for analysis to determine their contents. When he was stopped again last month, police allegedly found cocaine on his person. He was then arrested and booked at the Barry County Jail. He later posted bond.
